What is Reskilling?
Reskilling is teaching current employees new skills to prepare them for new responsibilities or job functions within their organization. Skills may be adjacent to each other, for example a computer programmer learning new math skills or communication skills to enhance their performance or gain promotion to a management position.
What is Upskilling?
Upskilling is teaching current employees new skill sets with the goal of advancing their current skill set. For example a computer programmer who builds video games learns a new programming language that allows them to also develop new software technologies.
Tips to Get Started with Reskilling and Upskilling
Here are some tips on how to develop and implement reskilling and upskilling programs to close skills gaps!
- Identify skills gaps at your company by monitoring the learning progress and job performance of each employee. Not measuring learning analytics? Check out our training measurement checklist here to get started. Group skills gaps together and coincide them with job roles and training initiatives. Think about what skills are needed to get the job done. Once you have a list of skills for each role, determine your highest priority skills and hone in on those skills for your training programs.
- Determine your KPIs and OKRs. This will not only help you determine the success of your skills training, but you can also measure employee engagement, turnover, and a number of other business outcomes.
- Build your reskilling and upskilling programs based on your goals and skills priorities. Leverage technology like Trivie to build your reskilling and upskilling programs.
